Previous Sociology and GSWS Joint Major Requirements (Prior to Fall 2016)

*These program requirements apply only to students who declared their major prior to Fall 2016. The current requirements can be viewed here. If you aren't sure which requirements apply to you, please contact an advisor.*

This page will explain only the Sociology side of the joint major requirements. You must consult the calendar and/or the GSWS department for the GSWS side of the joint major.  You must be able to ready to declare both sides in order to declare the joint major.

In order to declare the Sociology side of the joint major, you must have completed or be enrolled in the last of the lower division requirements, and your SA GPA must be 2.0 or above.

The lower division requirements (19 units*) are:

SA 101-4 Introduction to Anthropology
SA 150-4 Introduction to Sociology
SA 250-4 Introduction to Sociological Theory
SA 255-4 Introduction to Social Research Methods (Q)
STAT 203-3 Statistics for Social Sciences **

* Because most transferred courses are 3 units, and all SFU SA courses are 4 units, you may have completed the lower division required courses but be short of 23 units. If you are 1 or 2 units short, you will be able to declare. If you are 3 or more units short, you will need to take another lower division SA course in order to declare.

** There are five approved alternative courses to STAT 203: BUEC 232, PSYC 210, STAT 101, 102, or 201. However, STAT 203 is recommended as the most directly applicable to Social Sciences. It is also recommended to take SA 255 before the STAT requirement if possible.

Once you are declared in an SA program, you will have priority enrollment access to upper division courses.

The upper division requirements (20 units*) are:

SA 350-4 Classical Sociological Thought
SA 355-4 Quantiative Methods**
Three upper division SA electives, all of which must be S-designated. You can see the SA courses listed by designation here.

*If you are short 3 or more units, you will need to take an additional upper division SA course.

**POL 315 is an approved alternative for SA 355.

Notes:

No more than 4 units in Directed Readings may be used towards completion of this program.

No more than 15 upper division units transferred from another institution may be used towards fulfilling these requirements.

Your SA GPA and UD GPA must be 2.0 or higher for admission to and completion of this program.
