VIBRATION

f = v / λ

If v = 344 m/sec and
λ= 2 metres, then f = 172 Hz which is just under pitch F below middle C
and if v = 1130 ft/sec and λ= 6 feet, then f = 188.3 Hz which is between F and F#.
Whoever calculated the diagram at right was thinking of 0° C (which is really too cold) and came up with pitch E.

Try finding an enclosed space exactly 2 m or 6 ft square and hum this pitch with a friend to get the octave above its basic resonance frequency (its eigentone)!
