REEL 26 COMMENTARY

1. Sounds like a large hall, main ambience created by people talking and PA voice. Foreground by some strange-sounding pinball machines.

2. Bruce acquiring information about location and types of foghorns on the coast.

3. "Punk" harassing recordists first minute of take. Wooden clunks from balls falling in foreground, gambling wheel in background and lots of voices. It is a clear, hi-fi ambience with lots of interesting rhythms.

4. More "Punks" molesting recordists.

5. Gambling wheel from closeup, accompanied by pops and bangs in background and lots of voices.

6. Same ambience as above, with hawkers calling out, trying to attract people to their games.

7. Over PA system.

8. Talk is mainly about noise levels of snowmobiles. Background ambience constituted by PA voice and games section. Gambling wheel cuts right through.

9. Speaks into microphone, great rap, even though fairly low-key.

10. Hawker speaks into microphone (short level drop at 35"). Recordist walks through area. Gambling wheel in background, coming closer at 1'35". PA moves into background, kids voices throughout. Again fairly hi-fi, clear ambience. Gambling wheel is the most clear sound throughout. Going away from wheel (3'20"). Nevertheless still very clear. Moving on (3'30") to another unidentifiable game that costs 25 cents. Back to hawker (5'00"). Good take with lots of variety because recordist is moving through the area. Change of ambience (6'00"), away from gambling area.

11,12. Note the immediate lo-fi character of this section in the games section. Soundtracks have a high content of low frequencies and mask most other discrete sounds around.

13. This take much like take 10.

14. Merry-go-round music. Gambling wheel still audible in background.

15. Very quiet ambience with insects (crickets) singing. Two or three cars passing. Take a bit short, but more of this on Reel 27.
