REEL 38 COMMENTARY

1. This is the same tune as on Reel 37, last take: "Tommy's Dream". The guitar is a Hawaiian guitar. See data sheet for details on songs.

2. This take includes 3 songs. These two people are completely tuned into each other (even though the instruments tend to be out of tune and harmonies are funky), but they probably have done this for years, they don't have to talk, they know what's coming next! It's great. Recordists are getting off on it more and more. Some conversation after 3rd song, at end of take.

3. 1 song and then conversation. J & H Murphy amused about the thought that Peter should play along with them on the G string violin. Peter then plays it as bagpipe effect in next song.

4. A Spanish and Hawaiian guitar. The first part of first tune is slow and sounds a bit disorganized, but great. A medley of tunes. Conversation after this (4'00"). "Tommy's Dream" again (4'50"). Last tune, slow and chaotic, just as beginning (6'00"), at end Johnny Murphy sings along.

5. For details on tunes see data sheet. Ambience extremely quiet, marvelous echoes. Echoes and some print through form background together, interesting effect!

6. Next morning, better weather for echoes.

7. Door chimes accompanied by change of ambience as walking outside.

8. Much more lively ambience, with birds singing, wind blowing. Some wind on microphone. Good echoes, no print throughs. Bruce is playing interesting sequence of short fragments, ad libs.

9. Trying to get it working, turning the handle with great racket. They make it during second time. They are ringing someone else. Someone else ringing in. Hilda Murphy talking to "Blell" on phone.
