REEL 40 COMMENTARY

1. Traffic ambience, with some distant car horns, occasional footsteps, voices. Wind in trees, but not on microphones. Taped chimes (5'30"-7'25") playing one verse of a hymn. Ambience between hymns fairly quiet. Chimes starting again (7'40"-8'55") playing one verse of another hymn.

2. Taken at the corner of Queen & Grafton Streets. Good car horns (0'15", 0'25", 1'55", 5'20", 5'40", 6'20"). There must be a traffic light, cars stop and start in regular rhythms. Footsteps and voices (3'00", 3'40", 6'00", 7'05") penetrate the traffic ambience occasionally.

3. Occasional traffic, general city rumble, in foreground workers hammering and scraping, talking and whistling. Good take.

4. Workers are building a wall next to carwash. At end of take a car begins to go through wash, sound dominates ambience.

5,6. Very loud (see data sheet for levels). Machinery turned off (2'20" in take 6).

7. Distortions.

8. Same with levels down.

9. Arranging to get foghorn turned on.

10. It is an electronic horn, very obnoxious sound. It blasts twice every 14". Just simply doesn't leave you in peace. Recording made close to seashore.

12. Longest and best take. Airplane passing overhead (1'45").
