REEL 43 COMMENTARY

1. Seems to be a rehearsal. They are singing from vestibule, accompanied by organ. Fairly distant. Then talk (1'15").

2. Talk first, then singing (1'20"), same song as in take 1. They sound close now, sing very slowly and draggy, always behind organ. One woman has an especially piercing voice.

3. Fairly quiet ambience, some distant traffic then church bell starts ringing (1'15"-1'35", 1'50"-2'30", 2'40"-3'15"). Very clangy sounding bell. Church door closing (3'40"), Bruce talking to priest for a short while.

4. A truly silent ambience. Only a few birds chirping at the beginning, otherwise nothing but -- what sounds like -- tape hiss. No other sounds.

8. Talk to clerk,, he has a radio running in background.

9. Announcement made in English and French.

10. Loud motor ambience and clanks when docking, cars begin leaving (2'10"), loudness of clanking differs according to weight of vehicle driving over bridge.

11. Commenting on how quiet P.E.I. is. Some walkie-talkie sound with ferry man (1'15"). Talks about old steamboats and steam whistles.

12. Recordists can't record the sound of this steam whistle, because it is a fire alarm as well as foghorn. Radio going during talk.

13. Talk between recordists. Are there cows on the ferry? Sounds like it (1'15"). Otherwise general broadband noise. Some more cars entering (3'20"). Whistle (3'55"), one short blast.

14. Walkie-talkie sounds, and clunks and rumbles as cars leave ferry.

15. TV is going while talking to guy in powerhouse.

16. At beginning sound of ramp very loud and with a very high frequency sound (again at 0'50"). Boat horn going during first ramp sound. Throughout take, CBC TV going and a fairly quiet 60 cycle hum.

17. It raises and lowers the bridge, take is just long enough for raising of bridge.
