REEL 54 COMMENTARY

1. Train approaching, then brakes squeaking and stopping (0'45").

2. Good take,, note quiet ambience after train has left.

3. One bell ringing in distance for 1'15" minutes, birds in foreground and only distant traffic. Otherwise very quiet. The bell is a bit clangy sounding.

4. Recordists swearing at beginning. Distant whistle and faint bell. Bell approaching (1'30") as train approaches. Whistle blowing (1'40") a bit distorted, recordist change levels in the middle of whistle blowing. Train stops (2'10").

6. Nice approach with lots of whistle blowing. Note how echo of horn is half tone lower. Unfortunately whistle distorting when it's closest. Many freight cars passing, very good part of take. Traffic ambience afterwards.

7. Passing traffic and wind in poplars mask the flapping flag at times.

8. Recorded from driveway. Most prominent sound is a saw, wood clunking. Recordists talking to man at mill (1'50"-2'40"). Good take in that it gives a clear acoustic impression of place.

9. Interesting rhythm, wind on microphone. Saw going in back ground. Note the muted sound of everything -- a very "wooden" environment.

11. Very energetic rhythm, accompanied by a high ringing sound.

12. Microphone pans to metal chute, where grain is transported. Note the high sizzling sound of grain rushing across metal.

13. Good fast rhythm.

14. Again interesting rhythm with a high ringing sound.

15. A driving kind of rhythm, where the bell is driven. Good take.

17. When machinery stops (1'20") note the quiet ambience, with water flowing, a distant saw buzzing, kids voices. Good take.

18. Machinery starts for 1 minute goes full speed until end of take.

19. At beginning machinery slowing down, stopping (30"), people talking, difficulties in communication between recordists and mill people who talk French or broken English. Walking up to attic (1'15"). Note change of ambience. Mill man shows mill "antiques". Hard to figure out what's going on. All visual demonstration.

20. Talk in Quebecois, about Quebec and Levesque, about the West, etc. Very animated conversation, lots of laughter. Great.

21. Lots of wind on this take, no good.

22. Recorded from car, more distant, saw going regularly in background, and a tractor idling throughout.

23. Nice., clear tractor sound and chains rattling. Note how wind modulates sound of tractor, and how sound changes when it drives away and returns. Car passing (1'55". 2'25", 3'15").
