REEL 68 COMMENTARY

1. Editor of Ayr News scratching his head for things to say: the usual jokes about the sound of arriving home late for supper. Printing press in background throughout.

2. Bad microphone disturbances at beginning (for 30"). About eight guys involved here (six at tables, two playing). There is lots of movement audible, feet shuffling, etc., as well as hooting, roaring, and teasing.

3. Talking to woman.

4. Microphone disturbances again at beginning. Loud male voices and whistling, footsteps sound very heavy. Otherwise very quiet ambience. Although there were four men playing here, this is really a single monologue from one of them. Great!

5. Very noisy, but interesting clatters and rhythms. By no means broadband. Very rhythmical.

6. Voices in back, hum in foreground.

7. Women during their coffee break, general conversation ambience. End of coffee break indicated by work buzzer (3'20"), then factory chugs into operation again, one can hear each piece of machinery start up in turn. It's like the beginning of a percussion piece (Steve Reich style). Last entry at 5'50". Recordists walk into spring room (7'20").

8. Very noisy with an underlying regular throbbing, another pitched hum, and a rhythmical clatter. Not unpleasant.

9/10. Fast rhythmical machine in foreground. Clattery, but gives good sense of movement.

11. Also very rhythmical: with very high unoiled, squeaky sound, a slapping sound and a low frequency throb.

12. Still that low frequency throb. It is getting obnoxious. More general clatter.

13. Everything from previous takes is now in background, no punch press yet.

14. Punch press starts at 0'55", sounds quite brutal. Nice rhythm, though. Very strong percussive sound.
