COMMENTARY

1, 2. At beginning water is gushing out of reservoir in rhythmic patterns. Recordist moves to larger outfall and then away. Note (at mark *) the pronounced phasing effect as the recordist moves away.

4. Disappearing train in neighbouring tunnel can be heard at beginning of this take.

5. "Smacking" drips create an interesting rhythm in a very clear ambience.

6. Not as striking an effect as one might expect.

7-10. Descriptions of directions very complicated; mostly women describing, with nice accents.

12. The main point of interest here is the cranking operation. The operator gets out of the boat, opens first gate and boat enters, then he cranks it shut and water is drained from the lock. Second gate is cranked open, and boat moves through into next stage of canal.

15. Strong gusts of wind, sheep, birds and pheasant create strong atmosphere. Note (at last mark *) wing-flap after pheasant call.

16. Solo singers and solo sheep-cries create nice counterpoint with each other. Gusts of wind continue.
