1.  Remembrance Day Event in front of the Cathedral (Domkerk)

COMMENTARY

1. Walking down the street towards the cathedral, with a single bell ringing. Deeper, more distant bells join in (4:00) and begin to dominate as the recordist gets closer and stops (6:30). There is little traffic noise during this part of the ceremony. Gradually the bell texture thins out (10:00), leaving just the higher bell with its prominent resonances (11:20). This bell stops as a band begins the National Anthem (12:30). The assembled people begin singing. Silence follows (14:45) and then the carillon begins (15:02) playng a sombre melody. Some traffic noise resumes in the background. People start moving towards the church. The carillon stops (22:00) and on entering the church (23:25), the organ is playing. It ends (26:00) and after a short pause, a preacher begins, emphasizing the long reverb of the church interior. The recording ends (37:00). A recording of a string ensemble fades in and continues until 46:00, when the organ resumes with a choir singing before the recording ends (47:00).

Commentary by the recordist published in R. M. Schafer's The Tuning of the World (1977).
