REEL 105 COMMENTARY

1. Pleasant motor sound. Recordists are getting ready to record, attendant checking them out. Then moving to platform.

2. Not much happening, no roar of engines, little else to focus on to define this event of train arriving, other than the engine bell.

*0'35" train bell approaching.

0'55" train pulls up quietly.

1'30" steam valve, and at 1'50".

1'45" soft motor passes by.

2'15" "Want me to give you a speech?"

2'40" move out.

3/4. Recordist walks into main waiting hall of the station, waits. Quite a clear, lucid reverberation. The station was not crowded. It is an old place with a very high ceiling. Take 4 has several children with active voices in this space.

*5. Staged p.a. announcement. Recordist's colleague has a fake message for recordist, to hear the p.a. system in this highly reverberant space.

6. Walking in and out of the washroom, squeaky door, fan.

1'40" out of washroom.

2'00" move outside, traffic ambience.

7. This noisy installation was roaring about 15 feet above the sidewalk, over the doors to the Granville Street entrance. (Sound pressure levels: 73-76 dBA @ approx. 15'.) The masking effect is especially noticeable at 8'30" when even an idling motorcycle is not at first identifiable. At beginning of take recordist leaves car, walks to position on sidewalk near the roaring ventilation duct.

*8'30" rhythmic popping of motorcycle, squeaky bus brakes.

10'30" microphone position changes to Potter's Jewellery Store.

12'25" passing conversation.

12'35" microphones approach the soundwall, some phasing noticeable.

13'00" "'Whatever are you doing?"
