REEL 108 COMMENTARY

1. Ambience by waterfront with rain,The horn is distant, growling, very low. Recorded at the home of the recordist.

1'25" horn, strange, deep pitched, very distant.

2'45" again, lower level still.

5'40" train whistle.

2. Short tour of study areas on the 5th floor with whitewashed soundscape, i.e., ventilation noise, air conditioning.

1'35" microphones move around periphery of stacks.

3. Contrast to broadband sound of previous take: tonal hums from fluorescent lights in stairwell and from mechanical source in boiler-room next to stack area. Interesting pitches. Walking toward humming display at beginning of take.

0'35" move away, walking to bottom of stairwell, 3 flights down.

1'20" enter science floor, walk toward mechanical humming sound.

3'00" walk toward reference area.

3'15" ventilation noise at reference area.

4'20" flipping pages of a dictionary.

5'10" move away.
