REEL 113 COMMENTARY

General Remarks: Herb George is a 67 year-old Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh elder. His mother was Halkomelem, and he spoke this language when very young, but remembers only place names. This language was the language of the people of Burrard Inlet. The Squamish influence was the result of conquest (the squamish tribes normally lived further north on the coast). Note the quiet background ambience throughout the whole interview.

1. Opens with talk about Halkomeylan dialect, different local place names.

3'00" some Indian history.

5'15" more place names.

6'15" memory rusting up, names continue.

2. Opens with reference to a snake story, mixed with Roman Catholic imagery. The talk continues, about local legends.

8'00" more snake story, this time mixed with nuclear imagery.

10'00" reference to Hebrew mythology.

14'00" talk about spear fishing.

Continued on reel 114.
