REEL 133 COMMENTARY

1. Recordist is at the foot of Granville Street. Overall a more muted event than the subsequent years, and slower to reach a peak.

0'10" Recordist ID (Barry Truax) describing the situation

1'48" One horn begins, some voices, then more distant horns join in

4'30" horns swell, including lower ones, footsteps (5'40"), distant bell (6'00") marking midnight, train whistle (6'40"), several CPR Ferry blasts (7'16"), and nice mix of horns, siren (8'50"), people passing, another siren (9'45'), distant horns very rhythmic and persistent, more sirens (14'00"), one persistent horn continues with interesting echo sounding at a slightly different pitch, a higher horn joins in (19'20"), and eventually the horns stop (21'30")

2. Recordist is at the foot of Granville Street, called Granville Square at that time, facing the harbour.

0'09" Recordist ID (Barry Truax) describing the situation

1'58" Low horns begin, also at 2'24"

2'45" horns start to swell, distant fireworks and kids shout out "Happy New Year" (2'52"); CPR Ferry docked close by produces one long loud blast (2'59"  );other horns follow, another shout by kids, nice blend of horns from many directions, more shouting, car starting, horns start to fall off (6'45"), distant siren (8'39"), then distant ambience, some wind noise.

3. Same location, one year later, low droning ambience, someone says "Happy New Year" (0'32"), horns start (1'44"), blasts from CPR Ferry (2'07", 2'25", 2'42"), another loud horn and CPR Ferry (3'30"), noisy shouts from people nearby, more distant horns, another series of CPR Ferry blasts (5'30", 6'45"), with responses from people, then only more distant horns and occasional voices, beginning of fade out (13'30") then fades back in to catch some distant fireworks. Simultaneously, Hildegard Westerkamp is recording the event from the Stanley Park side, a recording that appears as track 9 on the Vancouver Soundscape double CD.
