REEL 37 COMMENTARY

1. Opens with pulsing ventilation duct outside building, great pulsing sound with powerful beat.

0'50" moving away from duct, footsteps after that.

2. 7:00 a.m. The event was attended by about 300 people ranging from company officials and dignitaries in regalia to workers and families. Wooden blocks under the ship are being knocked out with hammers and jackhammers. Hammering has nice full sonority to it. Jackhammer bursts of about 5-10 seconds each, several times a minute. Amused voices in background.

1'00" hammering begins, recordist moves closer, jackhammers, chainsaw in background. Good construction sequence with hammering resonating strongly.

1'55" voices.

2'25" recordist moves closer to activity, voices and work sounds clearer.

3'00" lull with chainsaw in background.

3'25" build-up of work sounds.

4'00" moving closer to chainsaw.

4'15" close-up jackhammer.

4'28" chainsaw very close.

4'45" only hammering and voices (crowds), quiet with intermittent jackhammer.

6'30" clear, regular hammering sound with voices only in background (to 6'45").

8'15" just jackhammer, no hammering.

3. Opens with greater distance, P.A. voice in background, speeches, jackhammer still going intermittently.

4'10" ventilator pulsing switches on briefly.

5'15" The Lord's Prayer.

*7'30" champagne and applause, boat slides with loud continuous high pitch into water. Powerful sound.

4. Opens with recordist moving along street. Mostly traffic ambience.

2'45" man sweeping street, question to recordist.

4'50" air brakes of bus.
