REEL 40 COMMENTARY

1. Opens with conversation about sound levels, broadband noise in background throughout.

3'15" comments on effect of sudden noise in quiet environment.

*5'00" warning horn demonstration.

5'45" bell and siren sound (telephone signal).

6'00" talking about work rhythm of 8 days on, 6 days off - good; union talk, ear protection and ear tests with language; also talking about home situation, his wife noticing when he gets hard of hearing.

*10'20" door to engineering room opens momentarily (loud blast). Talk about effects of noise.

14'30" comments on audibility of emergency warning signals at his home.

16'00" "could talk noise with you all night, this is wonderful!"

2. Recordists have been called up to bridge to see if they can advise on radio reception.

0'20" knocking on door and entering bridge. Loud radio sound with interference. Radio off and conversation about reception.

3. Conversation with captain about sounds. He has a heavy Scottish accent.

5. In coffee shop: CBC-AM radio time signal being broadcast over ship's p.a.

6. Recordist walking through various passenger areas on the ferry. Not very interesting, mostly broadband sound from boat.
