REEL 46 COMMENTARY

1. Folding machine and hum of other equipment in background.

2'05" folding machine in proper operation.

3'00" microphones change perspective, move back again.

3'15" machine stops with screech.

3'55" machine starts up again.

4'10" machine stops.

2. Very grainy sound, interesting rhythm with steady hum in background.

1'05" microphone perspective changes.

1'12" machine off.

1'16" machine on.

1'28" machine off.

3. Not great, steady hum.

0'15" preparing paper.

0'20" background sound appears behind listener on headphones.

4. Xerox 7000, fast rhythm with hum in back.

0'40" machine off.

1'42" paper sounds appear behind listener again on headphones, some talk with recordist.

2'12" Xerox 3600, a very noisy hum, covers other hum.

2'25" machine off, more close-up paper sounds.

2'41" machine on, xeroxing rhythm.

3'01" machine off.

5. Good close-up sound, good rhythm.

1'00" microphone perspective changes, slight changes in rhythm as well.

1'42" all machinery off, note the sudden quiet.

Recordists talking.

6. Recordist reads names of all machinery recorded on previous takes.

7. Pacific Northwest Rattlesnake. Note the extreme quiet throughout. The snake was in a terrarium a few inches from the microphones, and was in full possession of his fangs. Some rattles very clear and strong, close-up.

0'30" biologist whispers encouragement.

1'35" begins to rattle.

8. More rattles and some conversation.

9. Conversation with biologist about rattlesnakes and rattlesnake bites, exchange of stories.

10. This "sound" is the quietest that was ever recorded.

0'10" turning off the lights before recording.

0'55" telephone ringing, interruption of expectant silence, talk in background.

1'40" recordist reacting to boa constrictor crawling over microphones and up recordist's arm, all in silence, only some cracks and swooshes audible on microphones.

2'55" footsteps in background, complete silence after.

11. Near practice studio, piano blends with office sounds (xerox machine).

1'00" piano player notices, stops playing.

12. Buying coffee, getting it treated by the girls behind the counter. Ping pong, jukebox ambience in spacious, reverberant room, some conversation. Very lo-fi environment.
