REEL 78 COMMENTARY

1. Despite serious wind problems, this is a fairly rich sequence. A dense sound environment, crowded with screaming gulls, a constant dull roar of engine activity, whistles and pockets of dialogue (mostly Japanese).

1'45" train bell, dense soundscape with motors and busy seagulls.

1'50" rattle of boat.

*2'35" hosing the sidewalk in front of Fisherman's Wharf.

3'30" train bell in background.

*4'00" extended whistle blast, great!

5'00" men working on some boats.

6'50" some Japanese.

6'55" boat starting up (the "Twilight Star").

8'15" shunting noise.

8'45" same train whistle.

11'30" whistle again -- more distant.

13'00" distant shift whistle, boat motors in background.

*13'30" B.C. Sugar Refinery shift whistle (noon) with water sounds.

13'40" 0 Canada horns -- distant.

14'15" nearby boat passes in front of microphones, nice motor sound, disturbed by wind problems.

15'00" men sewing, working on nets (Japanese).

15'10" passerby's comments on recording equipment.

2. A heavy texture of conversation, but clear enough to understand nearby voices, especially on headphones. No hums from fans as in many other restaurants.

0'50" walking upstairs to restaurant, and inside, busy lunch ambience.

2'25" crockery placed in front of microphones.

3'25" hungry recordists order lunch.

3. Starts in restaurant, then leaving and wandering about on the packing and loading wharf. Various mechanical noises, and one old electric radio, playing CJJC. This is not as coherent a sequence as take 1.

0'25" cash register, pay for meal, leave restaurant.

1'05" down the stairs to parking lot.

1'50" into fish packing place.

2'10" out of fish packing place.

*2'30" banging on oil drums.

2'40" into another packing place, radio playing, passing water sounds on concrete.

3'30" close-up radio and static, water sounds, women's voices.

5'20" loading noises, dumping crabs into cart.

6'10" "Whatya got there?" and rattling cart.

7'10" cart rattles off, whirring sound briefly from elsewhere, men's voices, seagulls screaming in background.
