REEL 80 COMMENTARY

1. Over-recorded at start, low frequency vibration from escalator distorted, no good.

2. Starts with spiel from auctioneer, good.

1'30" transition to another space.

3. Compared to some other mall recordings in this collection, these takes are relatively well focused. They concentrate on certain areas rather than move around constantly. Starts outside, good general mall sound with very typical moozak.

0'30" mother-child exchange, impatient mother.

2'15" low frequency hum, then transition to another space.

3'00" "What are you, 007?" in clock store, recordist wants clocks ticking, salesperson is skeptical, funny exchange.

*4'45" coo-coo clock and chimes.

6'40" coo-coo clock and chimes.

7'45" transition to another space.

9'15" transition from one moozak to another.

10'40" turning pages, in a book store.

10'45" "Is that recording?"

11'00" new space, close-up woman's voice, buying some nuts in a nut shop.

11'40" "That's quite a set-up, eh?"

4. 2'00" "Excuse me, would you mind telling me what you're doing?"

3'25" "What are you doing?"

*5'15" Woolworth's pet shop: canaries, tropical fish, etc. Quite amazing bird sound, very busy.

6'15" loud hum.

9'00" mynah bird greets the recordists, back into mall.

*11'35" acoustic blurb on "automated learning courses".

12'40" price marking machine.

13'20" heavy low frequency vibrations.

14'00" lugubrious radio announcer's voice.
