REEL 87 COMMENTARY

1. In this sequence, the recordist moves with the passengers from the platform and up to the main hall and out to the street. Opens on platform (by electric motor) waiting for train.

0'30" rhythmic tapping sound, made by train attendant while waiting for arrival of train.

1'00" questions from attendant.

1'27" train bell.

1'40" train arrives.

2'37" blast of steam, followed by banging, clanking, etc.

3'04" microphones change position, note the sudden quiet.

3'35" footsteps from passengers.

3'53" seaplane starts in distance, growls overhead.

4'05" fan motor comes on and covers up seaplane.

4'50" voices of passengers, masked by noise.

5'15" motor off, baggage and joking "how many have you got there?"

5'40" attendants' voices, laughter.

6'35" tug whistle (long, short, short) from harbour, distant.

6'45" people talking, passing, intermittently in next few minutes.

7'12" clear voices and footsteps, mother and child talk about escalator.

8'05" escalator ride.

8'35" voices get excited on the way to meet friends, a real feeling of anticipation. Entering big space with large reverb. Not many people, welcome greetings very clear.

9'05" telephone.

10'10" "Did you get the ambassador's picture?"

10'50" Move outside, and "there they are" from woman, pointing to the Italian ambassador and his wife. Busy ambience.

11'40" cab toots horn.

13'05" fragment of 2-way cab radio.

15'05" questions to recordists and grunt of truck brakes.

2. Small jackhammer and gasoline vacuum cleaner.

3. Echoey urban soundscape, traffic-"wash" at distance and individual cars passing in foreground.

0'35" chimes from Pender and Howe.

4. Recorded from same location as previous take (Pender & Howe).

0'30" "What's that?"

*3'50" B.C. Hydro Horn, powerful, followed by Royal Trust chimes (incomplete).

5. Noon ambience in health food restaurant in the financial section of downtown. Classical background music is from a record player. Few voices, otherwise very quiet.

6. An almost drunken soundwalk, wavering to and fro between the street and a couple of Italian restaurants. Begins walking out of recordist's house.

*2'25" live music from the Gallo d'Oro Restaurant (electric piano) through the back door, then walking on.

4'50" walking inside Luigi's Restaurant, live music.

8'40" leaving restaurant, moving back to street, heavy traffic.

10'10" passing by Luigi's Restaurant again.

11'10" and back in, very close for a moment.

11'20" and out, lots of muscle cars.

12'45" strains of the Gallo d'Oro, and slightly drunken dialogue at a distance.

14'45" car toot.

16'30" outside a pool hall.

18'05" car with radio passes by close to microphones.

19'30" recordist takes keys out as he walks up steps to house.
