REEL 97 COMMENTARY

General Remarks: (Also for reels 98 and 99.) This ring was the occasion of a visit by a touring group of English bell ringers. They rang a peal of over 5,000 changes, called an "Eight-Splice Surprise Major", lasting about 3 hours. Parts of this ring are included in The Vancouver Soundscape, which also gives an example of the notation which the ringers use.

1. Waiting in the rain for the cathedral bells. Opens with Royal Trust chimes, which mix with a train whistle in the distance. Great!

*4'00" test peal.

4'55" car horn.

5'00" two more bell notes.

10'15" "Whatya doin'?"

*10'30" peal begins.

11'30" change position, walking toward main street.

14'00" change position again, closer to bells.

2. This take was recorded beside the cathedral, much cleaner, less rain.

2'45" church custodian saying recordists are in the best place for sound.

Continued on reel 98.
