DAT 10 COMMENTARY

 

VANCOUVER AQUARIUM

1. ID, conversation, very interesting whale calls at 0:58, 1:58, 2:08, 2:18, 2:29, whales continue to call and blow air getting more active at 4:30. people conversing throughout, distant jets and music

2. ID, people talking, prerecorded "arctic sounds" of marine mammals in background

3. ID, walk through various sound installations, 2:00 walrus exhibit, tape ID, 2:36 bowhead exhibit, tape ID, interesting harmonic hum of motors from the exhibits, 5:10 Lancaster Sound exhibit, ID, child saying "sounds" at 5:43, very good!

4. ID, Announcer describing the behavior of whales, training whistles, man directing traffic, whale spitting water, children laughing

5. ID, pre-recorded display at sea lion tank, people talking, footsteps, distant boat horn at 1:10, 1:14 peacock call (nice), 1:35 second boat horn, 1:56 teaching, whale breath at 3:11, into gift shop at 3:58, squeaky whale toys, 4:58 back outside, 5:46 car idling

8. ID, traffic, car horn at 1:21, sea plane, fountain throughout, busses, people on streets, sea gulls at 9:36, 13:28 and 17:36, car alarm at 7:50, church bells start at 21:40, car horn at 22:25, bells stop at 27:33, very long take of city ambience

9. ID, bells from below the bell tower, air brakes, birds (sparrows), some mic noise, bells pause at 2:05, bells start again at 2:54, bells stop at 10:04, traffic throughout

10. ID, traffic, sea gulls, car starting, bells start at 6:33, 12:14 brake squeaks, bells and brakes intermingle interestingly, 14:22 bells stop

11. ID, bells and traffic compete, bells fade quickly into the ambience as recordist walks away from church, by 1:20 the bells are almost inaudible, with the rushes in the traffic they cannot be heard

17. ID, inside ringing chamber, -20 dB attenuation on DAT machine in anticipation of loud bells, nice resonance of bells in chamber, good close recordings of bells, a perspective most people have not heard, very loud
