A half century earlier, residents in South Vancouver report hearing the bells clearly, even though they were several miles away. What had changed?

- rising ambient noise levels
- tall buildings which now blocked the sound

A century ago, the Holy Rosary steeples were the highest building in the city and there was "line of sight" for sound transmission
