Inspection

Biosafety inspections are required for all laboratories storing, handling or using biohazardous materials to ensure the Tri-Council (NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR) that laboratories in Canada are in compliance with the applicable biosafety guidelines.

Copies of the inspection checklists can be viewed in advance of your lab's inspection to assist your lab in preparing for an inspection. These can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

Inspection Checklist

The inspection checklist used at Simon Fraser University is based on the Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines published by the Public Health Agency of Canada (for human pathogens) and the Containment Standards for Veterinary Facilities published by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (for animal pathogens). Remember that the risk group of an organism may be different than the required containment level.

If your laboratory or field research is containment level 1 or 2, please refer to the checklists provided on the right.

If you are only working with plant pathogens, transgenic plants or aquatic animal pathogens, please contact the biosafety office for specific guidelines.
