Rights and Responsibilities

Every party involved in providing accommodations and services through the CAL has a specific set of rights and responsibilities.

The CAL has the right to:

  • Request and receive current disability documentation that supports a student’s eligibility to receive accommodations and services.
  • Deny a request for accommodations and services if: the request is not warranted; the student fails to provide appropriate documentation; the accommodation is not supported by the needs assessment; or the request imposes a fundamental alteration to a course, exam or degree program, or poses a direct threat to the public or community.

The CAL has the responsibility to:

  • Provide information in formats accessible to students with disabilities.
  • Ensure that courses, programs, services and activities are accessible to students with disabilities.
  • Determine appropriate accommodations as supported by the submitted documentation and in collaboration with the student and relevant faculty.
  • Coordinate accommodations and services.
  • Maintain appropriate confidential records and communication, and only disclose this information when an information release form has been signed by the student.
  • Serve as a liaison between students with disabilities and faculty.
  • Serve as a resource on disability issues for the SFU campus community.
