Apply to Co-op for Free contest

If you've been thinking of applying to our renowned Co-op program, now is the time to act. Every student who completes the online Co-op application form between May 1 and May 24 is eligible to win back their application fee! We will randomly select one winner per week from those who have applied to Co-op online: www.sfu.ca/coop/apply.

Discover Co-op

A recent survey of 1,500 SFU Co-op alumni showed that students who completed more co-op work terms found work faster after graduation, and earned a higher salary in their first career position (and continue to make more in their current positions). What's more, 94% of respondents felt that they had a competitive advantage on the job market over their non co-op peers. If you want to take advantage of Co-op, consider attending a 50-minute Discover Co-op info session to learn everything you need to know. And remember:

  • Apply to Co-op as soon as possible during your degree (even in first year)

  • 90 units or higher is too late to apply to the program

  • Registration is required for info sessions - find out more here: www.sfu.ca/coop/info-sessions.

Canvas is coming

Canvas is a friendly, flexible course platform that will replace WebCT at SFU by 2014. If you take a course this summer, you might get an early look at Canvas -- and a chance to offer your feedback on how well it works -- since some instructors will use the platform as part of a pilot project. If you would like to learn more about Canvas, check out www.sfu.ca/canvas for videos, FAQs, and help links.

Attend the XYBOOM Conference at The ROUNDHOUSE in Yaletown - May 28, 9-5

  • Share openly and frankly about what you want and expect from other generations in the workplace

  • Share what you can offer as an individual and as a member of your generation at the workplace

  • Debunk some of the negative stereotypes about your generation by offering your insights and experiences

  • Receive strategies to take back to your workplace so that you can help create and add to a more collaborative environment

Info and registration: http://www.xyboom.com/.

Don't wait until it's too late to prepare for your next job application. Register for a workshop by Career Services and take advantage of the in-depth expertise and feedback our career advisors have to offer. Details and registration: www.sfu.ca/career/events.

Both semesters are intensive and experiential, meeting downtown at SFU's Harbour Centre five days a week from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm (summer) and 9:30 am - 4:00 pm (fall). You may not take other courses during the term, or have employment or other commitments during the course hours.

It's official! A bold choice to replace WebCT

On September 27, the Board of Governors endorsed the choice of Canvas to replace WebCT as the university's platform for course delivery and management.

Canvas is a recently developed, open-source learning management system (LMS) that emphasizes flexibility and easy integration with emerging technologies. It is designed to be accessible from various devices, including mobile devices. The choice of Canvas reflects the input of the entire SFU academic community, including almost 6,700 responses to a student survey.

The transition will be carried out in stages, and instructors and students will have multiple training opportunities. WebCT will continue to be supported until the transition is complete in 2014.

For more information, see the project website or Facebook page.
