Health and Dental Plan - Undergraduates

All undergraduate students* are enrolled in the SFSS Health and Dental Plan and the plan fee is automatically included in your tuition fees. The plan runs from September to August of the following year, and is pro-rated for students new to SFU in Spring term.

Opt-out deadlines and change of coverage deadlines for the Health and Dental Plan are published at studentcare.ca

You can opt out if you provide proof to studentcare.ca of equivalent coverage. If you do not opt out you will owe the plan fee as charged.

Opting out must be done every year even if you have opted out before. If you provided proof of coverage to studentcare.ca in a previous year, you can log in to studentcare.ca within the Change of Coverage period and indicate that you still want to opt out.

Please see studentcare.ca for complete details (such as what is covered by the plan) or call Student Care at 1-866-369-8795.

New international students' health insurance

International students are not immediately eligible for the BC Medical Services Plan (BC MSP). (See www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/health/health-drug-coverage/msp for details.) Therefore, effective January 2013, new international (visa and exchange) students are enrolled in a mandatory four month primary International Medical Insurance plan and the plan fee is automatically included in their tuition fees.

You may be eligible for a refund of the unused portion of your insurance if you have not made a claim and there is more than one month of coverage remaining when you apply through guard.me@SFU. Your application for a partial reimbursement must be received by guard.me@SFU before the last month of the term (that is before April 1, August 1 or December 1). If approved, your partial refund will be applied to your SFU account.

Until you opt out you will remain enrolled in the guard.me@International Services for Students Medical Insurance plan as long as you are a student at SFU.

Please see www.guard.me/sfu for complete plan details or call guard.me at 1-877-873-8447.
