New international students' health insurance for first semester
All new international students enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or exchange program at SFU have been automatically enrolled in a mandatory four (4) month primary medical insurance plan for their first term through guard.me@SFU and the plan fee automatically included in their tuition fees. New international and exchange and study abroad students must then apply for coverage under the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) if they will be a resident of BC for longer than six (6) months.
Great Northern Way Campus/Centre for Digital Media students are also covered by the plan. International students who have previously attended SFU and were absent from the University for three or more consecutive terms or are readmitted to SFU under SFU's policy of reactivation and readmission will also be enrolled in the guard.me@SFU plan in the term they continue their studies at SFU.
This plan provides interim coverage during the waiting period for the BC MSP, if eligible. Students will be able to opt out providing they have coverage under the BC Medical Services Plan (BC MSP) or coverage under an eligible plan. For more details, see www.sfu.ca/medical-insurance.html.
You may be eligible for a refund of the unused portion of your insurance if you have not made a claim and there is more than one month of coverage remaining when you apply through guard.me@SFU. Your application for a partial reimbursement must be received by guard.me@SFU before the last month of the term (that is before April 1, August 1 or December 1). If approved, your partial refund will be applied to your SFU account.
Please see www.guard.me/sfu for complete plan details or call guard.me at 1-877-873-8447.
