High School Applicants - Awards & Bursaries

The Indigenous Undergraduate Student Entrance Award application is open until April 30th.

All other Fall 2024 Entrance Award and Bursary applications are now closed.

Only successful recipients will be notified from April to June 2024.

Entrance Awards & Bursaries - Application Required

SFU offers several bursaries and awards to assist students for whom the cost of attending university would be a significant impediment.

To be considered, applicants must be applying for the Fall term, Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and have a demonstrated financial need. In addition, applicants must have grades in the 80% range in courses required for their primary program or the minimum IB diploma score required for admission (excluding predicted bonus points).

By submitting one complete application and supporting documentation (if required), you will be considered for the list below.

Fairfax Entrance Bursary

  • Value: $30,000 ($3,000 x 10 installments over 5 years max)
  • Number: 2
  • Citizenship: Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Term: Fall only
  • Applicants must have grades in the 90% range in courses required for their primary program or 31 IB points (excluding predicted bonus points)
  • Must be graduating from a Canadian High School

Gilhooley Family Entrance Bursary in Business

  • Value: $40,000 ($4,000 x 10 installments; Fall and Spring payments only)
  • Number: 1
  • Citizenship: Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Term: Fall only
  • Must be admitted to and majoring in an undergraduate degree program in the Beedie School of Business
  • Must be graduating from a Canadian High School

Alan and Margaret Eyre Entrance Bursary in Business

  • Value: $20,000 ($2,500 x 8 installments over 4 years max)
  • Number: 2
  • Citizenship: Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Term: Fall only
  • Must be admitted to and majoring in an undergraduate degree program in the Beedie School of Business
  • Must be graduating from a Canadian High School

H.Y. Louie Entrance Award 

  • Value: $5,000 (1 installment)
  • Number: 15-20
  • Citizenship: Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Term: Fall only
Supporting Documents Required:
  • One (1) Community Reference Letter 
  • A summary of your achievements and activities demonstrating your involvement:
    provide clear, concise details about your volunteer work, school or community involvement, extracurricular activities, and artistic or athletic interests (500 words max)

Lohn Foundation Entrance Award 

  • Value: $5,000 (1 installment)
  • Number: 10-15
  • Citizenship: Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Term: Fall only
Supporting Documents Required:
  • One (1) Community Reference Letter
  • A summary of your achievements and activities demonstrating your involvement:
    provide clear, concise details about your volunteer work, school or community involvement, extracurricular activities, and artistic or athletic interests (500 words max)

Y.P. Heung Foundation Entrance Award

  • Value: $5,000 (1 installment)
  • Number: 15
  • Citizenship: Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Term: Fall only
  • Must be admitted to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences or Faculty of Science
  • At least three (3) of these awards will be made available to Indigenous applicants

Jack and Sadie Diamond Secondary School Entrance Award

  • Value: $5,000 (1 installment)
  • Number: 3
  • Citizenship: Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Term: Fall only
  • Must be entering SFU from a BC secondary school

  • One (1) Community Reference Letter 
  • A summary of your achievements and activities demonstrating your involvement:

The application form and any required supporting documents must be submitted via email by the deadline date. Follow the instructions on the application form.

Indigenous Awards - Application Required

Indigenous Undergraduate Student Entrance Award

  • Value: $5,000 (one installment)
  • Number: varies
  • Citizenship: Canadian Indigenous
  • Term: Fall only
  • Applicants will have demonstrated involvement within the Indigenous community through service and/or cultural contribution. Recipients would demonstrate this through their commitment to engagement, leadership and social justice within their community and would be selected based on their ability to demonstrate how their current and future experience(s) are inclusive of the 4Rs (Kirkness & Barnhardt, 1991): Respect, Relevance, Reciprocity, and Responsibility. 

Supporting Documents Required:

  • One (1) Community Reference Letter
  • Documentation of your Indigenous heritage: photocopy or scan of your Status or Métis card (front & back)

For those who do not have membership or documentation that verifies Indigenous ancestry for various reasons (i.e., due to colonization, displacement, non-status, adoption, etc.), we acknowledge that this may be a difficult or upsetting process. We will make every effort to ensure it is done in a culturally safe and trauma-informed way.
