My Classroom

The Project

The goal of the My Classroom project is to transform our learning spaces into flexible, integrated and connected spaces that meet the current and future needs of our students and instructors.

The Learning Space Design Committee embarked on a project in the Fall of 2018 to work with Diamond Schmitt Architects, leaders in learning space design, to evaluate 232 centrall managed spaces and determine how to aligh them to:

  • SFU's strategic priorities
  • Current trends in learning space design
  • The needs of students and instructors

As part of this project, we heard from students, faculty and staff from all three campuses and here's what they had to say:

  • furniture is static and doesn't accommodate different teaching modalities
  • it's a challenge to schedule rooms that are fit for purpose, i.e. class size and format
  • classrooms need to be flexible, adaptable, intuitive with furniture to support different teaching modalities and
  • be supportive, accessible and inclusive to enhance learning and not adversly affect it

The Team

SFU's Learning Space Design Committee consists of representatives from the:

  • Registrar's office
  • faculties
  • student reps
  • Facilities Management
  • IT Services

They have engaged a team of education planning specialists, higher education technology specialists, architects, interior designers, and engineers.

Get Involved

Thanks to everyone who came to view, sit on, and sample the future of classroom furniture solutions during our showcase event on December 3–5, 2019.

If you weren’t able to attend the showcase, you can still view furniture photos and submit your feedback online until January 15, 2020. Don’t miss out on this chance to participate in the My Classroom initiative to “transform our learning spaces into flexible, integrated and connected spaces.”
