Study permits

International students currently in Canada or abroad, and who are not Canadian citizens, will need a valid study permit to be eligible to study at SFU. These are a type of immigration document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and can take several months to process, so we strongly recommend you complete your application as soon as possible before you arrive in Canada.

Please note: you'll first need to provide a provincial attestation letter (PAL) if you're applying for a new study permit from outside of Canada. If, however, you're already in Canada and are extending your study permit while still valid, you won't need to provide a PAL. You can check your requirement status through the IRCC website.
