Ecological, social and economic sustainability is an institutional priority at SFU, and is woven throughout all vice-presidential portfolios, including planning and administration, operations, research and academics, campus and community engagement. As a signatory of the Talloires Declaration, the Climate Change Statement for Action for Canada, the Paris Pledge for Action, and second Canadian university to sign the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Investments, SFU is a leading institution in the transition to a sustainable society.
SFU is Canada's leading engaged university. As outlined within its Strategic Vision, sustainability is one of SFU's six institutional priorities. SFU pursues sustainability through its programs and operations, teaching and learning, research and community engagement; seeks and shares solutions; develops and models best practices, from minimizing its ecological footprint, to maximizing its social health and economic strength.
Sustainability Policy (GP 38)
SFU is responsible for educating and assisting members of the University community to understand and fulfill their responsibilities to practice sustainability, mindful of the need to balance ecological, social and economic imperatives in an open and transparent decision-making process.
Community-Developed 20-Year Sustainability Vision
In 2016, over 2,400 SFU students, faculty, staff and senior leadership participated in a yearlong engagement process to envision SFU’s sustainable future. The resulting vision and goals lay the foundation for all institutional sustainability work.
