Sustainability Planning

VISION

Sustainability planning at SFU reflects the University’s decision to make sustainability one of its six Guiding Principles:

SFU will pursue ecological, social and economic sustainability through its programs and operations. Through teaching and learning, research and community engagement, SFU will seek and share solutions. In its own operations, it will develop and model best practices, from minimizing its ecological footprint, to maximizing its social health and economic strength.

SFU Strategic Vision

POLICY

In 2008, SFU adopted its Sustainability Policy (GP 38), which commits the University to “bring vision, intellect and high ethical standards to achieving and maintaining institutional leadership in sustainable operations, research, teaching, performance evaluation and community outreach.”

Vice-Presidents are responsible for reviewing Sustainability Action Plans for their portfolios, and for approving actions, schedules and funding to implement them. Information from the Plans will be compiled and published in an Annual Sustainability Report.

PLANNING

The Vice Presidents established the Senior Sustainability Council in July 2012 tasked with developing a comprehensive strategic plan to address sustainability issues across the University consistent with the requirements of the policy to address and report on ecological, social and economic sustainability across the full range of its activities.

SFU's Sustainability Strategic Plan   was developed over eight months by the Senior Sustainability Council in collaboration with members of their portfolios and supported administratively by the Sustainability Office, and has been approved by the Vice Presidents.

The Plan establishes a foundation for SFU's integration of sustainability into the full range of its academic, operational and community activity and will guide the beginnings of the implementation process.

REPORTING

Through the Sustainability Office, SFU reports on its progress in addressing ecological, economic and social sustainability through regular reports to government (BC’s Carbon Neutral Action Report), to its peers (Sustainability Tracking and Reporting System — STARS), and to it internal and external communities (Annual Reports).
