Welcome to the Sustainability Advisory Committee’s current initiatives page. Although the committee has a primarily advisory role, it does initiate and support sustainability projects on campus. Below is a listing of our current initiatives.

Online Sustainability Portal

The committee launched SFU’s official online sustainability portal in January 2008. This online resource is designed to provide the SFU and UniverCity community with a central portal for sustainability resources, event notices, community initiative updates and ways individuals can get involved on campus. The portal includes the following features:

  5. Sustainability Advisory Committee Information (including committee meeting notes, contacts and projects)

We will be continuously updating and improving this portal and look forward to your suggestions and feedback. If you have suggestions for improvements please send them to sustainability@sfu.ca

Strategic Planning for Sustainability Leadership

The SFU Sustainability Advisory Committtee began work on a five year strategic plan in late 2008 and intends to finalize this plan in early May. The plan will include goals for 2009-2013.

SFU Sustainability Policy Development

The policy drafted by the SFU Sustainability Advisory Committee has now been approved and is posted on the general policies page of the SFU website. Look for policy GP 38

New Staff and Faculty Orientation Initiative

Committee co-chair KC Bell regularly attends orientation sessions for new staff and faculty to introduce these new SFU community members to sustainability concepts and how they can contribute to the SFU sustainability initiative.

Campus Sustainability Ambassadors Program

The Committee has develped a departmental sustainability ambassador program. This program is providing training for departmental representatives to assist with sustainability programming and education. Recruitment for this program began April 28th for staff and faculty ambassadors. The first training session took place on the June 25th and 26th 2008. Forty-five ambassadors from across all three campuses have been trained to implement sustainability education programs in their departments.

Academic Sub-Committee of the Sustainability Advisory Committee

A new sub-committee of SFU faculty members dedicated to integrating sustainability principles into curriculum, research, and classroom teaching practices was founded in March 2009. This sub-committee will work with the Sustainability Advisory Committee to help it reach it's strategic goals.

Campus Sustainability Action Research Program (CSAR)

The Campus Sustainability Action Research Program provides an opportunity for students to get course credit for campus related sustainability research reports. These reports are done by undergraduate and graduate students. The SFU Sustainability Advisory Committee reviews the reports yearly and uses the recommendations provided to make decisions concerning sustainability priorities. SFU greenSMART: Community Innovation and Excellence Support Program

The SAC has supported the following projects, events and innovations on campus.
