Terry Fox Gold Medal Award Ceremony

The annual Terry Fox Gold Medal Award is a prestigious award that includes three terms' free tuition at SFU, a $1,000 cash prize, a gold medal, and a plaque.

The recipient of the 2011 Terry Fox Gold Medal is Casey Ruff.

The medal is awarded annually to a student who demonstrates courage in the face of adversity.

President Petter will present the Gold Medal to Casey at the SFU Walk/Run on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.

Terry Fox Gold Medal Award

Terry Fox was a Kinesiology major at SFU when he died from cancer in 1981. The Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $400 million for cancer research mostly from the annual worldwide Terry Fox runs in September.

The terms of reference for the award are as follows:

“The Terry Fox Gold Medal is awarded to a person who has demonstrated those personal qualities of courage in adversity and dedication to society which have been exemplified by Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope.”

What does this statement mean?

“Courage in adversity” – someone who has shown courage in dealing with a life threatening disease or a significant disability.
“Dedication to society” – that person described above who has gone on to help other people in similar situations, and serve as a role model for those people.

Eligibility for the 2011 award – you must have been a student, staff or faculty member at SFU. To be eligible as a student, you must have been registered as a student at SFU and have been in full time attendance for at least one of the three previous semesters – 2010 Summer, 2010 Fall or 2011 Spring. The deadline for application will be mid-April 2011.
