Dear SFU colleagues:

When the SFU Aboriginal Reconciliation Council released its report in Fall 2017, one of the dominant themes was the call for “Nothing about us without us.”

The Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) has taken that call literally. Today I am happy to announce that Dr. Dorothy Christian will be joining the Centre in the newly established role of Associate Director, Indigenous Initiatives, on February 1, 2019.

Dorothy is a scholar and visual storyteller from the Secwepemc and Syilx Nations of British Columbia. She has an MA in Communications from SFU and a PhD in Educational Studies from UBC, and she has extensive experience as a producer, director and writer in film and television.

In her new role she will be responsible for the strategic planning, co-development, implementation, evaluation and management of Indigenous initiatives associated with the TLC. She will also chair a new TLC Advisory Committee for Indigenous Initiatives and will work to build strong relationships and partnerships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities at SFU and beyond.

I am excited to welcome someone with Dorothy’s rich mix of experience, knowledge and dedication to the TLC. I believe her deep familiarity with Indigenous methodologies and systems of knowledge will be a transformative gift for the Centre and the SFU teaching and learning community.

Sincerely,

Brad Johnson
Director, Teaching and Learning Centre
