Cindy Xin

Educational Consultant, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Sciences


Cindy Xin is a teacher and consultant who has been working in the field of learning design, educational development, and program evaluation for the past 20 years. She has taught and conducted research at a variety of institutions, including Simon Fraser University, Brigham Young University, China Academy of Science, and China University of Science and Technology. She has also consulted for government, academy, and industry.

Cindy has been an adjunct professor in SFU’s Faculty of Education since 2008, where she teaches and supervises graduate students. She previously worked for the TeleLearning Network of Centres of Excellence and has collaborated extensively with faculty members and graduate students in Canada, the U.S., and around the world. She has participated in and led ground-breaking research and development in online education. These experiences inform her current work as an educational consultant in learning design, curriculum development, and faculty training. She continues to work and publish in the areas of computer-supported collaborative learning and educational technology. She is currently a member of an award-winning team that develops open-source technology for improving online discussion.

Cindy holds a PhD in Instructional Psychology and Technology, an M.Sc. in Instructional Science, and a B.Sc. in Mathematical Statistics.


Cindy works with instructors and academic departments in course and curriculum development and supports their inquiries into teaching practices. She runs the Art of Teaching brown bag lunch series for SFU instructors and graduate students, co-leads the Teaching Circles project for the Faculty of Science, and facilitates the Open Classroom project for the Department of Biological Sciences. She teaches in the Faculty of Education and in the Certificate Program in University Teaching and Learning for Graduate Students. She is also a member of an SFU team that researches and develops open source technology for improving online education.
