Math mentoring adds up for native kids
Aboriginal kids in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside are getting a leg up on their mathematics skills, thanks to a mentorship program created by education PhD student Melania Alvarez. SFU faculty, staff and student volunteers work one-on-one with children for an hour and a half, twice a week, using games, workbooks and conversation to make math fun and easier to learn.
City stars as outdoor classroom
David Zandvliet has been teaching the education faculty’s six-week environmental education course outdoors in the Queen Charlotte Islands for 10 years. In 2009, he brought the program home to the Lower Mainland for the first time as the result of new partnership with Metro Vancouver.
Culturally inclusive curriculum boosts aboriginal learning
A five-year SFU education pilot program in partnership with local first nations in Prince Rupert that uses imaginative and culturally inclusive teaching techniques has been a resounding success among aboriginal students in terms of improved attendance and academic performance.
