Increased coal shipments are public-health issue

Fraser Surrey Docks has received a permit from Port Metro Vancouver to expand its coal shipment operation on the Fraser River. SFU Health Sciences professor Tim Takaro says the project runs contrary to public health. “Coal is a fuel of the last century,” he says. “We have to stop using it sometime and here's a great opportunity to apply society's 'brakes', join communities in the U.S. that have refused to ship this same product, and think of the future generations who will inherit the messes we make.” Takaro adds there's a governance issue as well since Port Metro Vancouver is an unelected body, and it ignored a request from the health authority to have an independent health assessment made.
