Simon Fraser University’s Alumni Association will honour a pioneering paleontologist, a community activist, an Aboriginal physician and a globally engaged former Mountie as 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award recipients on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Vancouver’s Four Seasons Hotel. They are:

SFU biology professor Rolf Mathewes, one of Canada’s top paleoecologists, whose research reconstructs the history of climate events through time, answering fundamental questions in geology, biogeography and evolutionary biology. A pioneer in forensic botany, he uses science to help solve crimes;

James Chi Ming Pau, who, since arriving in Canada in 1975, has dedicated himself to improving the quality of life for residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Trained in both Western and traditional Chinese medicine, his humanitarian involvements include immigrant concerns, literacy, poverty, housing, street safety, dysfunctional families, seniors issues, drug and alcohol addiction, and health and wellness;

Nadine Caron, a surgeon at the University Hospital of Northern B.C. and an educator, patient advocate and community leader. She has served on many committees to help shape Canada’s health agenda and is internationally known for her advocacy work to address the special health needs and disparities of remote, northern and Aboriginal communities, and as a role model for First Nations youth;

Graham Muir, a 36-year veteran of the RCMP who has contributed to the safety of Canadians at home and abroad. His extensive police experience includes postings in Canada, the former Yugoslavia, Haiti, and most recently as the Canadian Police Commander in Afghanistan, where he provided expertise to the Afghan National Security Forces.
