Endowment benefits students, non-profit groups
A $250,000 donation from SurreyCares will give Simon Fraser University students new leadership experience in the non-profit sector.
The SurreyCares Non-Profit Leader Award endowment fund will generate an annual award enabling an SFU Master’s of Public Policy student to spend a co-op term at a non-governmental or non-profit organization that can’t typically afford to hire a student.
The award not only gives students a chance to apply their education toward bettering the world but also develops their awareness of career possibilities in the non-profit sector. It also creates a skilled pool of labour as the students graduate with the knowledge and experience they need to become future leaders in the sector.
Jeff Hector, SurreyCares president, says, “This co-op experience is a win-win for students and our community. It will provide students with valuable, guided experience and a deeper awareness of those who have needs in our community, while benefitting the community through the work of the non-profits they serve.”

After nearly 20 years of service, SurreyCares is the trustee of more than $3 million in private donations and has distributed $1.2 million to projects as diverse as scholarships, employment training, youth programs, food security, parks and gardens, arts and heritage projects, and many other worthwhile ventures that enhance the Surrey community.
