SFU names Executive Director, Communications & Marketing

Sarah Temple, a senior-level communications strategist with a long-standing focus on public and global health initiatives, will become Simon Fraser University’s new Executive Director, Communications and Marketing, effective Jan. 6, 2014.

Temple will lead SFU’s marketing, communications, and media and public relations planning with the goal of advancing the university’s strategic vision, visibility and brand.

Temple has 25 years of experience leading integrated marketing, strategic alliance and social marketing initiatives for public, corporate and nonprofit organizations seeking positive social change.

Her expertise includes 15 years directing multi-disciplinary health communications and marketing campaigns in the U.S., with a concentrated focus on public health and corporate responsibility strategy.

She brings an audience-based, results-driven approach to strategic communications, with extensive executive management experience across organizational strategy, change management and operational initiatives.

Says Temple: "I have followed SFU's trajectory over the years and have long been an admirer of the university's commitment to comprehensive and interdisciplinary education. I'm honoured to have this opportunity to join SFU at such a pivotal time in its history, and to contribute to sharing the story of SFU's role as an institution committed to global engagement."

Most recently, Temple served as Vice President, External Relations for Seattle-based PATH, an international nonprofit focused on global health innovation. She was responsible for raising the organization’s profile among social innovation sector partners such as the Clinton Global Initiative, managing communications and brand strategy, and increasing private philanthropic and corporate engagement.

Previously, she was senior vice president and chief, client affairs, for Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide in Washington, D.C. and led award-winning social marketing campaigns for public and private sector clients, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Fortune 100 clients.

While at Ogilvy, Temple served as project director for the NIH’s The Heart Truth campaign for women about heart disease, which introduced the Red Dress as an iconic women’s health symbol and contributed to a doubling of audience awareness levels. The Heart Truth was named by The Holmes Report in 2010 as one of the “top five campaigns” of the decade, and has been adopted by the Heart and Stroke Association of Canada.

Projects led by Temple and her teams have been recognized by the Public Relations Society of America (with Silver Anvil and Gold Sabre awards), CINE and the Financial Times of Canada. She is co-author of multiple textbook chapters, has published on social marketing and cross-sector partnership strategy and taught public relations and corporate communications at Georgetown University’s Center for Social Impact Communication.

Temple studied criminology at Simon Fraser University and holds a B.A. from the University of Toronto.
