Students fundraise to help feed kids
Simon Fraser University student Prianka Grewal is fundraising to ensure kids from local elementary schools are provided with healthy, nutritious breakfast through the Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society food bank initiatives.
On August 8, Grewal is organizing a fundraiser, the 2nd annual Prom Night: A Night Among the Stars, at the Grand Taj Banquet Hall in Surrey to expand the Start The Day Right program to other schools in Surrey and Delta. The program currently provides breakfast for children who come to school unfed at Strawberry Hill Elementary School.
"We've identified a greater need for a food bank within the general community especially after seeing how big of a difference it has made within just one school,” says Grewal, a political science student in SFU’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences who completed the Explorations program, and is also a Global Issues First-Year Learning Community (FLC) peer mentor at SFU. “Our goal this year is to raise double what we did last year so we can expand the program from within the schools to providing nutritious meals for anyone who is in need."
The Surrey resident began the initiative last year with her fellow student interns at PICS, a non-profit community based organization committed to building a healthy and just society that values and respects all cultures.
“We came to know that the CEO and managers of the organization had already been looking into starting up a food bank in the Delta region,” says Grewal. “We basically started with very little resources and through connections, we managed to pull off a fundraiser where we raised about $8,000.”
