Terry Lee retires as SFU Pipe Band Pipe Major
After 36 years at the helm of the six-time world champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, Terry Lee is retiring as the band’s pipe major.
Lee, who started the SFU band with brother and Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee, will remain involved with the band, continuing to pipe at band concerts and SFU Convocation ceremonies and teach young pipers through the band’s junior Robert Malcolm Memorial (RMM) Pipe Band. He’ll also remain active with tuning, music construction and band administration.
Taking the reigns and leading the band onto future competitive fields will be SFU Pipe Band piper Alan Bevan, a piper who, along with wife, Bonnie are longstanding members of the band.
“It just feels like the right time,” says Lee, who together with brother Jack was recently recognized by SFU for their leadership and dedication with honorary degrees. “I also want to leave the post at the right time to make sure we are in a position of strength, going forward. It’s my hope the band will not miss a beat and continue to be strong.”
The SFU band has been one of the world’s leading pipe bands since its inception, finishing in the top three at the World Pipe Band Championships 20 times, including six firsts and nine seconds.
Under Terry Lee’s direction the band has performed at some of the world’s great concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Centre, The Sydney Opera House, Mormon Tabernacle, and recorded a dozen CDs and a pair of videos.
“The band has been and continues to be in great hands,” says brother Jack Lee. “The veteran players are very enthusiastic in their support for Alan. It’s not very often that a retiring pipe major has the good fortune to pass the torch to a great piper and double gold medallist like Alan.
“He takes over running the band with a very sold corps of players including an excellent group of young talented players, a vibrant junior band program and a solid organization.”
In August, Bevan won the Highland Society of London Gold Medal (he won the equivalent gold medal in 2008 at the Northern Meeting in Inverness) and the prestigious Master's Invitational event leading up to the Worlds in 2009. Bevan, a lawyer with Fraserwest Law Group, is considered to be among the world’s best pipers.
Both Alan and Bonnie, of Abbotsford, are SFU alumni and their two sons, Alistair and Callum, are members of the RMM band.
