PhD mobility initiative advances SFU/ Indian Oil agreement
An agreement between Simon Fraser University and India Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOC) signed earlier this year will provide opportunities for Indian students sponsored by IOC to enter SFU PhD programs in selected areas.
A Memorandum of Understanding signed during SFU President Andrew Petter’s mission to India in January laid the groundwork for collaborations on hydrogen and fuel cell technology research between SFU and IOC Ltd., India’s flagship national oil company.
A PhD Mobility Agreement has now been formally established for the post-graduate training of Indian students.
Under the agreement, Indian Oil will provide a fellowship towards the PhD program for Indian citizens to spend one year at SFU, and a further three years at Indian Oil’s R&D Centre. SFU will provide a stipend during the year at SFU and a tuition award. Ten students will be participating in the initiative over the next five years.
The partnership was established to facilitate joint research projects in such fields as clean energy, fuel cell technology, hydrogen technology, natural gas, engineering, advanced materials and nanotechnology.
The partnership is a “natural fit” given SFU’s collaborative work with world-class companies advancing hydrogen and fuel cell activity, including Ballard Power and Powertech, notes SFU Vice-President, Research Mario Pinto. SFU has received substantive grants and established laboratory infrastructure to support its research.
“This exchange is in keeping with the ethos of SFU in engaging external partners to conduct research in an informed way,” says Pinto. “We maintain that this approach will yield maximal cultural, economic and societal impact.”
The collaboration will further enable exchanges for SFU faculty and students, including potential co-op placements, to work in IOC’s world-class R&D facility.
