Pipe band joins in Surrey celebration day
Members of the band—with a contingent from Surrey, including Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee, one of the world’s top pipers, and two of his piping sons, among others—will march on April 26 at 2 p.m. from SFU’s Surrey campus to the new hall north of Surrey’s City Centre Library.
“The procession will be symbolic of how SFU engages with its new neighbour, and how those in the new downtown core are all connected,” says Steve Dooley, executive director of SFU’s Surrey campus. “This is very much the city’s day and we are honored to join in the celebration.”
The band will play marching tunes during the procession then line up along the hall as council members and dignitaries pass by. They’ll also perform during the Party for the Planet daylong event.
“We look forward to showing our colours in the community,” says Bevan, the band’s newly minted pipe major. “While the band’s main focus is on competition and concerts, we do play at a number of community events beyond what we do for the university.” Among venues is the Remembrance Day parade at the Port Moody Legion, where the band has marched and performed afterwards every year since its inception.
The band took first place in the B.C. Pipe Band Association Annual Gathering April 18, a contest that kicks off its annual competition schedule, leading up to the world championships in August. Surrey’s Grant Maxwell—who will drum on Saturday—won the professional side drumming aggregate, among individual wins.
The band next competes at the Victoria Highland Games on the May long weekend.
