Media Advisory: Alumni awards honour innovators, community contributors
SFU and the Alumni Association are recognizing four inspiring alumni: an award-winning TV journalist and mental health advocate, a business leader and philanthropist, an executive search professional and community leader, and an internationally renowned SFU research chemist and innovator.
The annual Outstanding Alumni Awards recognize alumni whose accomplishments and contributions reflect the university’s mandate to engage the world. Alumni, faculty, staff, students and SFU’s many community friends submit nominations for these awards.
The four will be honoured at the association’s Outstanding Alumni Awards event at the Four Seasons Hotel on Wednesday, September 26. Honorees include:
Peter Akman, for professional achievement —an award-winning CTV National News journalist and storyteller, a former top athlete with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and a mental health advocate.
Ryan Beedie, for service to the community—a business leader and philanthropist. Beedie is helping shape the landscape of Metro Vancouver as well as the future of its citizens and communities.
Betsy Gibbons, for professional achievement—a highly-regarded human capital and executive search professional. Gibbons has a strong commitment to community leadership and volunteerism.
Professor Steven Holdcroft, for academic achievement—is a world-leading SFU research chemist, educator, innovator and collaborator working in the area of fuel cell technology and alternative energy.
