Gary McCarron, an associate professor in Simon Fraser University’s School of Communication, started off the new year by giving 360 fresh faces in his Introduction to Communications Studies class a rare career planning treat.

He brought in Rick Cluff, the host of CBC Vancouver radio’s Early Edition talk show.

An award-winning journalist and sports reporter with 38 years of experience in the field, Cluff gave McCarron’s students the scoop on what a journalism career is like in the real world.

“Rick's appearance was a bit unusual for me because I don't have many speakers who are doing career talks come to the class,” says McCarron.

“The benefits of his presentation were that students were able to see theory in action; they could imagine themselves taking the ideas we discuss in class and actually applying those ideas in the workplace. Rick also gave the students an idea of the breadth of opportunities in the media world.”
