How long does it take to complete the Graduate Diploma and Masters programs?
The Graduate Diploma may be completed in 2 or 3 semesters if a student takes 2-3 courses per semester. A part-time schedule would extend this timeline.
The Masters degree can be completed in less than 2 years if students are pursuing full-time study. A part-time schedule would extend this timeline.
How much does it cost to take the Graduate Diploma and Masters Program?
For the 2011-2012 academic year, tuition fees are set at $264.20 per credit hour for both programs. Students can calculate their tuition fees by multiplying the number of credit hours in which they are registered (i.e. 4, 8, 12 credit hours) , by the rate of tuition.
Information on current tuition rates, along with fees assessed in addition to tuition, can be found here.
Is Financial Assistance available?
Urban Studies students come from diverse backgrounds, reflecting a wide range of financial circumstances. Needs-based grants, merit based scholarships and fellowships, and student loans are available to defray the costs of graduate education.
Information on University-administered financial aid can be found at http://students.sfu.ca/fa/.
Urban Studies faculty may also hire students as research assistants.
Are Teaching Assistantships available?
As the Urban Studies program is not connected to an undergraduate program, teaching assistant (TA) positions are rarely available. However, other departments may periodically hire our students as TAs and such notices are circulated to students as they become available.
Can I take a course in another department at SFU or at another university?
Yes. With advance permission of the Program Director, students may take up to two courses beyond Urban Studies for inclusion in their program of study. Students interested in pursuing outside courses are asked to submit a request, along with a copy of the course outline, to the Program Director for consideration. This should be done 4-6 weeks ahead of the start of the semester.
Can I transfer between the Graduate Diploma program and the Masters program?
Students may apply to transfer between the Graduate Diploma and the Masters program. This is not an automatic process, and such applications are considered with all applications made for the Masters program and at the same annual deadline. Applicants must submit a full application package as noted here. Please note that Transfer students should complete (and adapt) the Application to Transfer form in place of the University's online Application form.
Is the Masters program recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Planning Institute of BC?
The M.Urb is not a recognized planning degree program. However, it would qualify as a related degree, one that, supported by additional years of work experience, may lead to membership. Information on membership criteria:

What are the language requirements for International students?
Applicants whose post-secondary degree(s) have been awarded in a nation where English is not an official language must meet or exceed the minimum satisfactory score on a standardized English language test acceptable to the University. The minimum scores and acceptable tests for graduate admission are available in the University Calendar.
