The SFU Urban Studies Program has always taken pride in the way our students and alumni are deeply engaged in their communities, as volunteers, critical thinkers, researchers and leaders. As the 2018 civic election (October 20) draws nearer, we are pleased to see that - so far - three of our students and alumni are offering themselves as candidates for election (or re-election) to three different local governments in Metro Vancouver.

  • John Becker, a master's student who is seeking re-election as mayor of Pitt Meadows
  • Jonathan Cote, an alumni who is seeking re-election as mayor of New Westminster
  • Brandon Yan, an alumni who was just nominated to run as a council candidate with the OneCity party in Vancouver

We commend John, Jonathan, and Brandon for stepping up to address the complex challenges and opportunities facing their cities and the Metro Vancouver region. We hope their urban studies education serves them well as they do so.
