Academic Planning Process 2019-2024

Academic Planning at Simon Fraser University

Simon Fraser University engages in ongoing, participatory, purposeful, systematic, integrated, and comprehensive planning. Plans are aligned and intended to lead to the fulfillment of SFU’s Vision/Mission, its core theme objectives, and the identified goals or intended outcomes of its programs and services. The Academic Plan is one of the institution's major plans and, along with associated Faculty and academic unit plans, is developed, refined, and updated regularly.

SFU's academic planning horizon is five years. The timeline and content of the plans are set in the Senate Guidelines for Academic Plans. The process now underway will cover the period 2019-2024.

The Planning Process: Phase One

The Academic Plan 2019-2024 is in Phase One of its development. Phase One introduces context related to the external and internal environments SFU should consider when preparing its next Academic Plan, identifies a number of challenges and priorities all units are asked to consider, poses a set of questions all units should ask themselves as they prepare their plans, and outlines initiatives already ongoing or planned that are of relevance to the next academic planning cycle.  The document titled "Context, Challenges and Questions" is provided below and will be presented to the SFU community for comment and questions.

The document will be presented at a number of Open Fora with the Vice-President, Academic and Provost (see below for dates and locations).

The Planning Process: Phase Two

During Phase Two, the Faculty and their Departments/Schools will develop five-year plans using the Phase One document as a guide. The Faculty plans are to be completed and submitted to the Office of the Vice-President, Academic in draft form May 2018.  Thereafter, the Faculty plans will be used to build the SFU Academic Plan 2019-2024, which will be submitted to Senate during the summer of 2018. Please note that the five-year period originally started off as being 2018-2023 and then was changed to 2019-2024.
